Founded in 2008, JEALOUS is a contemporary gallery and fine art print studio, with their gallery in Crouch End, North London and their print studio in Shoreditch in East London.
To kickstart my DPS year, I have chosen to help out in their contemporary gallery space in Crouch End, to get an insight into what a commercial gallery is like and how it operates. The following will be my documentation of my personal journey throughout this experience, including what I have learned, what I like and dislike and how it may be used to benefit my entrance into my final year at CSM and my future career in the arts.
Whatever my experience becomes, i'm determined to use it to my advantage. Entering this, my role will be mainly ad/hoc which includes: packing orders, setting up shows, cleaning the gallery space and any other tasks the gallery assistants assign me depending on the day ahead. The placement is a fixed termed of 20 days, 2 days per week from 27/09/21- 30/11/21, with the possibility of an extension should I enjoy my time there.

Day 1
In the morning I was shown around the gallery, where they keep general things, where they store the prints and how they organise them. I was shown how to pack orders, as being a commercial gallery, they are big on sales and presentation once a customer makes a purchase. I was shown how to pack prints to ensure they aren't damaged and reach the customer in the best condition possible.

To pack a print, one must ensure there are no creases, stains or marks on the print. If they can be removed, a smoother tool (seen in picture to left) can be used to carefully smooth out creases. If a print is too damaged, even the most tiny of marks that will be noticeable to the customer either must be communicated, or alternatively a discount may be offered in attempt to make a sale at a reduced price.
How to pack a print:
1. Wrap print securely in tissue paper
2. Cover corners with paper for protection
3. Securely tape corners down to appropriately sized cardboard
4. In one of the corners, tuck in the JEALOUS care sheet (includes instructions on how to store the print to the customer), a JEALOUS sticker and postcard to promote the gallery and encourage further sales.
5. Enclose the print in another piece of cardboard of the same sized, tape securely with parcel tape.
6. With two equal sized MDF boards, enclose the cardboard and tape securely.
7. Finish with a JEALOUS sticker on the front of the MDF, so the customer is able to identify their package instantly, and branding is clear.

Day 2
Set up of Dave Buonaguidi's WOT THREE WORDS exhibition, I wasn't asked to help set up the show which is disappointing but I don't expect them to trust me on my second day. Hopefully in future i'll be able to help.
The WOT THREE WORDS exhibition, is Dave Buonaguidi's family portrait studio. It's interactive, and attracts families who want their portrait taken with an artistic twist. It's commission based, with prices starting at 195 pounds for the smallest size. The art is interesting, not to my taste. I think it lacks depth and meaning, and contributes to the commercial art world, which is what this gallery is all about.

The exhibition allows for accessibility to the general public, in a way whereby they are able to design their own custom screen print, so they feel involved in the art.
According to Dave, everyone is made up of three things: their passions, their vices and their favourite food or drink. This was the inspiration for the exhibition.

Instead, I was given the task of photographing the exhibition once up, and editing them with Adobe photoshop, so they were website ready.
This was useful, as I was familiar with photoshop previously, but this gave me an opportunity to spend more time using it, strengthening my ability.
See edited photographs below.
